Another fascinating oddity from the good people at Rondo Music! Not only does this acoustic guitar have 8 strings (rather than the usual 6) - but it also sports a fanned fretboard, so the bass (lower strings are actually longer than the treble strings. Rondo
stays in business by meeting the needs of a few niche customers and
listening very closely to what they ask for. The guitars are exactly
specified based on a strong community on the internet - and then
manufactured in Korea, for an amzingly low cost. Rondo already had a line of extended range electric guitars (all the way uo to 10 strings!!) as well as fanned fret (multi-scale) instruments. But theis time the request was for an acoustic version. They made both a 7 and 8 string version, and as far as I know these are the only production guitars of this type available anywhere! For
the price this thing is amazing - it has a solid spruce top, solid
mahogany back, sides and neck, as well as an inbuilt pickup system and
pre-amp complete with tuner! The biggest
problem with this is finding strings for the 8th (lowest) string.
No-one makes one thick enough! They need to taper to fit the bridge. (I
might modify the guitar in future to accept an acoustic bass string) |
