Lakland Skyline 55-01

Lakland have followed an unusual model to build the most playable instruments available at the price point.

Although not cheap, these are less than half the cost of an American hand made bass, but every bit as playable - and they sound amazing too.

The necks and bodies of these bases are built in the far east, (probably using CNC machinies for shaping and routing) to reduce cost but assembled and set up by Lakland in Chicago.

The design is simple, with no fancy embelishments. The money is spent where it matters to the player. Top quality hardware including Bartolini pickups and active electronics, and American quality in assembly and set up.

There are two things that make this bass stand out from the crowd:

1) Extra long scale (35in, compared to the regular "long scale" of 34in). Really nice low "B"!

2) PLEK setup. This is a very high end machine that laser scans the frets and levels and finishes them to create a perfect setup. Super low action (if you want it) with no buzzes, rattles or dead spots. To have this this done to an existing instrument costs many hundreds of dollars, but it really does make a HUGE difference that you can feel the moment you pick it up.

I normally prefer a rosewood/ebony fretboard, but of the two I played in store, this one just felt like "home" - so maple it was!
